Is your dog slimming down for no apparent reason such as a diet change or increased physical activity? When these organs are compromised, they have to work harder to run, leading to increased energy expenditure. If you pet has a disease of any of their organs, you will notice that they are more tired than usual.  
Cancer: Cancer in any part of the body is going to cause the dog of yours to lose weight. Many cancers clean away nutrients, causing degeneration of extra fat as well as muscle . Additionally, a substance called TNF is released in the entire body by the liver which causes the cells to use much more energy compared to normal. Your dog will lose his appetite because of TNF and won't want to eat, another characteristic of nearly all cancers.  
Depression: The same as in humans, depression can cause changes in appetite which will bring with it unhealthy weight loss or gain.
